How the Use of New Media negatively impacts Journalism?

New media is related to journalism in many ways. One of the ways is using the internet to publish news. The main purpose of journalism is to provide people with important social and political news. In the past, journalism is done through the television, radio and newspaper. Now, people turn to the internet to search for news. This greatly lowers the quality of journalism.

So now the question is how does it lower the quality of journalism?

In the old days, publishing a news required large investments and this alone makes the source reliable. Now, internet is readily available to anyone with a computer and internet connection and this makes the source of news unreliable. You cant believe everything on the internet because the source may not come from a professional journalist. Whenever i read the news on the internet, many questions come to mind. For example, "Where did it come from?" or "Can I trust that it is original?" etc.

One of the most common thing that people read is celebrity gossip. There are many websites on celebrity gossip like
JustJared, PerezHilton, Celebrity-Gossip etc. All these websites have almost similar content which poses as a danger that once something is on the Internet, it tends to be accepted as a fact and repeated many times. The audience will start to believe the content on the website because they see multiple articles on the same issue from many different websites.

Internet-based news can also result in the loss of originality. People are constantly competing with the rest of the internet users, which may lead to plagiarism. Many websites post almost exact stories, some sites even replicated the newspaper online. This clearly shows that a loss of originality is present.

To sum it all up, there are many causes on how the use of new media can negatively impact journalism. Firstly, everyone wants to be the first to publish new information. Secondly, the web tends to be a place where opinion is preferred over careful and unbiased reporting. This resulted in the posting of some very hateful comments on the web. Thirdly, internet-based news still do not provide the kind of expensive and in-depth journalism that mainstream media have done.

  1. Hey there Rachel. An interesting topic you have up there. It did not dawn on me that New Media could affect journalism this much. Your points stated above seem reasonable. However, suppose i come across a website with a certain article and i am not really sure whether it is believable or not, are there any signs that i should look out for in the webpage itself, for me to be ensured that the article might be true?

  6. I think you made a good point by saying the quality of journalism has declined with the introduction of new media as its medium. However I think it could be seen more as an enhancement. It would be provide better accessibility and provide further reach for journalists. Where the community of people in interest could be the world now! I think its a good trade for quality

  7. Hi Rachel
Indeed, the news which we get should be from unabiased and reliable sources.

Citizen journalism has seen an increase in popularity, with the advent of the new media. Sites such as Stomp have a loyal following. Have you considered the implications of the reliability of citizen journalism?

Celebrity gossip online is juicy and makes for good entertainment. However, I have difficulty seeing how it is a branch of journalism. How is celebrity gossip considered journalism? What are your views?

  8. To Kasturi:

    Thanks Kasturi!
I believe that people have to become very smart consumers of news, especially with the amazing amount of information available on the Internet. What I can suggest to you is that the next time you read an article on a webpage, think about what are the motivations of whoever put it there and also whether the article can be found from other sources. :)

    To Jinghui:

I am glad that my post has made you understand how the use of new media can affect journalism negatively. :)
Yes, I believe that some of the contents are not true because the source may not always be reliable.

    To Gayathri:

Yes gayathri, we must be careful of whatever piece of information we are reading.

Yes, plagirism is a common problem in the internet.

    To Leslie:

Yes, I feel that there are both negative and positive impacts of the new media on journalism. :)

    To Ms Lynn Ng:

    Hello Ms Lynn Ng,
No, I have actually not considered the implications of the reliability of citizen journalism. Now that you have mentioned it, I feel that there are many implications. One of them is that we do not know who the writers are as any citizen can just publish a news and this makes online news unreliable.
Celebrity gossip is celebrity journalism. It focuses on people who are either already famous or are very attractive, such as people who do something newsworthy. Many gossip magazines or even the newspaper write about celebrities and I feel that this itself is already a form of journalism. :)

  17. Hey there, I found your site blogger.com while browsing http:
    //newmedia-journalism.blogspot.com/. Have you ever thought
about including a bit more than simply text in your articles?
It's true, what you're saying is beneficial and all.

Nevertheless think about if you were to include some awesome images or video
clips to give your posts just a little more "pop". Your page content is superior, but if you were to
include more diverse media, your blog could undeniably be
among the best in its area of interest in contrast to other sites on .
